Biography

BACKGROUND

Born into a family of healthcare workers, nurses, and doctors, Ben grew up in rural Pennsylvania observing his father, an emergency medicine MD, at the local hospital.  Surrounded by medicine from an early age, Ben always knew that he would work in healthcare in some capacity.

Ben’s ideas about the doctor-patient relationship and his understanding of the benefits of personalized medicine began while watching his father treat patients in the ER. Here, he saw the difference between treating a patient for a medical condition and empowering them to overcome it.

As an emergency medicine MD, his father knew that most of his patients lacked access to good primary care. To fill this void, his father often offered lifestyle and nutritional recommendations and acupuncture and massage referrals instead of medications. His father would even buy copies of books to distribute to patients for free, causing one of his patients who was suffering from heart disease to comment, “I’ve never had a doctor prescribe a book before!”

Moments like this have helped Ben see the divide between allopathic and naturopathic medicine. It is now his goal to help bridge this gap by teaching and expanding on the principles of lifestyle medicine and advising patients about the prevention and management of chronic disease through their choices.

EDUCATION

Starting at an early age, Ben explored various aspects of the healthcare system and worked in multiple healthcare environments, including a hospital, a home health and hospice facility, and an addiction treatment clinic. These experiences helped Ben gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare industry and led him to his current role as a naturopathic physician.

Ben completed his premedical education and Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Akron and then earned his doctoral degree at the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon.

Essential to a positive patient experience, Ben feels that a strong doctor-patient relationship begins by listening to patients to allow the relationship to develop and to clearly identify the patient’s goals, support system, and motivations for change.  Ben connects the dots to help patients understand what is going on with them and fosters a strong doctor-patient relationship that mitigates the fear of illness and empowers patients to take control of their health.

Ben finds it rewarding to work with patients who are ready to take an active role in their health and need the right plan and support to help them reach their goals. He loves offering personalized, evidence-based medicine, guiding patients through their healthcare options, and empowering patients to make informed decisions.

Providing primary and preventative care to patients of all ages, Ben treats a wide range of conditions, including digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, endocrine disorders, depression and anxiety, metabolic dysfunction, musculoskeletal pain, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and systemic inflammation. He also has advanced training in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy and has a special interest in improving the health, independence, and quality of life in older patients.
