Integrative Autism Care
Explore integrative autism care, what makes it different from conventional autism care, and how this care is delivered at NaturoMedica.
By Lisa Roth
When a child is diagnosed with autism, families often face a whirlwind of referrals, waitlists, and meetings with a team that might include a pediatrician, therapists, and psychologists. As parents go through these steps, they start to ask bigger questions. They want to know not just what their child is going through, but why. They also wonder what other options might be available beyond one diagnosis or specialty.
This growing movement toward integrative autism care reflects a fundamental shift in how families view wellness. Rather than treating isolated symptoms, more parents are seeking practitioners who examine the biological, nutritional, and environmental factors that influence how their child thinks, feels, and functions day to day.
At NaturoMedica, we believe in a thoughtful, whole-child approach to wellness. This method complements traditional care by considering all aspects of a child’s biology, environment, and development.
The Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (MAPS)
More families are choosing MAPS-certified practitioners for their specialized knowledge and integrative strategies, which offer a more complete approach to supporting children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
MAPS is a professional training group formed to fill a gap in traditional medicine. While pediatricians can diagnose autism, they often don’t have enough tools to manage the complex physical health issues that can come with it. MAPS stands out because it recognizes that many children with autism have underlying, measurable medical conditions that can affect their behavior, thinking, and development. Instead of seeing autism only as a behavioral or psychiatric issue, MAPS-trained providers are equipped to investigate the physiology (i.e., the body systems) that might be causing symptoms.
For parents, this framework delivers clear advantages. By addressing underlying medical conditions, MAPS providers may help improve a child’s focus, communication, mood, and behavior, thereby greatly improving daily life at home and at school.
MAPS offers clinical training and certification programs for licensed medical and naturopathic providers. This curriculum covers biomedical and functional aspects of caring for children with complex neurodevelopmental needs. In addition to autism, MAPS providers address co-occurring conditions such as PANS/PANDAS, OCD, and ADHD.
For providers, MAPS certification signals advanced expertise beyond conventional training, specifically in nutritional biochemistry, gut and immune health, and environmental influences. Providers benefit from this postgraduate credential through required ongoing education, which ensures they stay current with the latest scientific developments. This additional knowledge enables MAPS practitioners to collaborate effectively with conventional medical teams and advance patient care by integrating multiple perspectives.

MAPS Care at NaturoMedica
We are proud to have Dr. Lisa Wada, a specialist in Autism Spectrum Disorders, on our team of naturopathic physicians. As a MAPS Fellow (FMAPS), she is highly trained in root-cause care, dietary strategies, and neurological treatments for children with complex chronic conditions.
Dr. Wada has been an active MAPS member since 2017, and she has spoken at MAPS CME Conferences, addressing complicated issues and sharing ways to support autistic children and adolescents. She values being part of a community that cares deeply about families and children with autism and is open to asking important “why” questions. Dr. Wada feels honored to work in a field that encourages curiosity, open discussion, learning, and sharing ideas with colleagues around the world.
Providing a counter-perspective to families who have been told to "wait and see" or that there are no other options, Dr. Wada uses MAPS tools to consider the whole child—their immune system, nutrition, gut health, environment, sleep, and emotional well-being.
Dr. Wada’s experience with neurodiversity in her own family helps her connect with and support other families. Her experience reminds her every day that behind every diagnosis there is a unique, amazing child with their own personality, gifts, and challenges, and that supporting the whole family is just as important as treating the patient.
Many families visit Dr. Wada after years of worry and feeling unheard. She works to ease their concerns and ensure they feel heard. She enjoys working together to solve problems, celebrate small wins, and make daily life easier. Her goal is not to “fix” a child, but to support their health, remove barriers to thriving, and help families feel hopeful and understood.
The first consultation with Dr. Wada usually lasts 75 to 90 minutes. During the appointment, keeping the child comfortable and noticing when they need a break are top priorities. If a child has trouble staying in the room, one parent can take them outside or home while the other parent continues the visit. Dr. Wada can also conduct the first appointment online if in-person visits are not possible.
Dr. Wada is dedicated to helping children reach their full potential and leads in the care of complex pediatric conditions. You can learn more about Dr. Wada here.
Building a True Partnership through Integrative Autism Care
One of the most meaningful distinctions of integrative autism care is the strong relationship it builds between families and practitioners. In traditional care, parents often just receive information. In integrative care, they are invited to take an active role.
MAPS-aligned and naturopathic practitioners usually spend more time with families, collecting detailed health histories and asking about diet, sleep, family stress, and environmental factors. Parents are encouraged to share what they notice, track changes at home, and ask questions without feeling rushed.
This shared decision-making approach is central to naturopathic medicine. Families are seen as experts on their child’s daily life, while practitioners bring clinical knowledge to help interpret and respond to that experience. Together, they create a care plan that is both scientific and personal.
For parents who have felt their instincts were ignored in the past, this partnership can be life-changing. Moving from being passive recipients to active partners often brings positive changes for the whole family.
At NaturoMedica, this partnership is at the heart of our naturopathic approach. We believe that informed, empowered parents are key to a child’s wellness, and we are here to support them every step of the way.
Finding Your Starting Point on Integrative Autism Care
If you are a parent interested in integrative autism care, asking a few thoughtful questions can help you decide whether this approach aligns with your family’s values and needs.
Questions to ask a prospective integrative autism care practitioner:
- Do you have MAPS certification or training in functional and naturopathic approaches to autism?
- How do you assess gut health, nutrient status, and environmental factors?
- How do you collaborate with our existing care team?
- What does a typical care plan look like, and how is progress evaluated?
To find the right fit, choose a practitioner who listens more than they talk, explains things clearly, and gives practical, realistic advice. Integrative autism care is not about doing everything at once. Instead, it’s about starting carefully and building step by step.
At NaturoMedica, we believe every child deserves care that respects their full complexity. Our naturopathic approach, grounded in individualized assessment, nutritional support, and whole-body wellness, matches the values of MAPS-informed care.
